Nokia’s mid-tier ‘Mystic’ to be dubbed C6, will hit stores in

February 8, 2010

We can’t state we were overwhelmed by the first leaked pics of what we’ve come to know as the Nokia Mystic, but there’s something about this QWERTY candybar form factor that Nokia just does so well that we have to hang onto the benefit of the doubt. The latest news on this front is that the handset will be dubbed the Nokia C6, which makes a lot of sense as a counterpart to the numeric keypad-equipped but similarly styled Nokia C5 that was recently leaked. Word is that the C6 should retail for around 200 Euro (about $274 US), and that it should be released in May or June. It seems logical that we’ll see both of these S60 3rd edition phones at MWC this month, but there’s nothing solid on that front just yet.

Sony Ericsson Aspen caught on video, loving life with WinMo 6.5.3

February 8, 2010

Chances are we’re missing something incredibly awesome being stated in this foreign-language video, but we have the ability to probably guess what Mobile-review Sergey Kuzmin is saying: “I’ve got the Sony Ericsson Aspen and you don’t. Life is grand.” Okay, so maybe we’re a tiny jealous, but at least he was kind enough to give us a brief look at the hardware out in the wild, showing off some of Windows Mobile 6.5.3’s menus and sizing it up with some of Apple, Nokia, and RIM’s offerings. Let’s not waste any more time — the video you seek is after the break.

Watch Nexus One get built, then beaten mercilessly

February 8, 2010

This might be the ideal entry yet in Google’s Nexus One video series. Today’s double feature is marked by the testing and manufacturing of the device, and while the all-white facilities and assembly lines can be interesting in their own right, we love nothing more than seeing just how Google and HTC stress test its labor of love. Watch it dropped, slammed, bent, poked, and detonated — okay, maybe not detonated, and we unfortunately don’t get to see any phones crack, but it’s still good fun. The massive game’s not on yet, so give yourself a few minutes and hit up the two short videos after the break.

RIM’s BIS 3.0 email features apparently leaked, finally does Gmail justice

February 8, 2010

For a platform billing itself as the business user’s ideal friend, BlackBerry’s list of unsupported protocols that have achieved ubiquity is actually astonishing: you can’t do two-way read status sync with an IMAP email account, for example, and amazingly, you can’t natively connect to an Exchange ActiveSync service without being routed through RIM’s back-end software. In a shocking move that’s straight out of 2002, it seems at least one of those niggles is going to get patched up soon thanks to a leaked list of email features in BlackBerry Internet Service 3.0, the software carriers deploy to marshal all data connectivity on the handsets they’ve deployed to customers. Yes, that’s right: you’ll be able to synchronize read status and sent items with your Gmail account, just as if you were using virtually any other phone produced in the last several years! It’s hard to fathom that it’s taken this long, but hey, we’ll take it — unfortunately, it’s up to each carrier to decide when they’re going to deploy BIS upgrades, so your mileage may vary on the wait time. Of course, RIM could just add IMAP support directly to its phones so that this whiz-bang tech would work with any third-party email service and wouldn’t have to go through BIS in the process, but that would be crazy talk, right?

[Thanks, Jeff]

Dell Mini 5 earns FCC approval, AT&T 3G coverage assured

February 7, 2010

Remember those rumors back in the day that Dell’s Android-powered Streak MID — the device that would later be revealed as the Mini 5 — would be manufactured by Qisda? Well, we’ve got some pretty solid proof of that now that it’s hit the FCC under Qisda’s name. What you see on the left is the label submitted in today’s filing for a device called the Qisda M01M; on the right, you have a shot from that pictorial of a device in Shenzhen of the same name. Look pretty much identical? Yeah, we’ve definitely got the Mini 5 here, and it’s described in the RF test reports as a “mobile internet device” with support for WiFi plus full HSPA on WCDMA bands II and V (that’s the coverage needed by AT&T, Rogers, Bell, and Telus, by the way) plus EDGE on the same frequencies. We’re sure that this version’s got a few more bands for user outside North America, too, but seeing how the FCC generally doesn’t care about them, Qisda’s gone light on the details. Anyhow, this works out nicely for a release later this year, doesn’t it?

Xperia X10 lands on Vodafone UK in April

February 7, 2010

We don’t have pricing, we don’t have specific dates, we just thought we’d let you know that Sony Ericsson’s already outdated Android phone is arriving in the UK in April. This concurs with the release schedules for Japan and Germany, making the fourth month of the year seem like a certainty for the global launch of what is still a hotly anticipated device. Just why the X10 engenders such fervor, we’re not really sure, but it still marks Sony Ericsson’s most aggressive plunge into the smartphone shark pool yet. We’ll just have to wait another couple of months to find out how well that Donut-based OS swims.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Bell scores 163K net adds in Q4, has HSPA launch to thank

February 7, 2010

Bell and Telus’ massive, sudden addition of nationwide HSPA networks to succeed their legacy CDMA towers was an experiment unlike anything the wireless world had ever seen; at no other time had carriers that big jumped from one 3G technology to another, and it was anyone’s guess how well it’d go and what effect it’d have on their bottom line — clean-slate network build-outs aren’t cheap, after all. We’ve got part of that answer now that Bell has reported fourth quarter earnings, and in a nutshell, it seems like this may have a massive gamble that paid off. The company’s wireless unit saw a 2 percent decrease against the previous in EBIDTA — and ARPU fell by CAD $1.48 to CAD $51.08 — but here’s where the bubbly gets broken out: it saw a 39.3 percent increase in gross activations to 523,000, up 11.3 percent year-over-year. That works out to 163,000 net adds, nearly certainly attributable to the launch of HSPA service and a variety of hot new handsets (and some older ones — the iPhone 3GS, for instance) that gave some disgruntled Rogers customer the ammo they needed to bolt. It’ll likely be a good long while before Bell actually goes net positive on its big network investment, but early signs certainly advocate that it was the right move to make.

Verizon advertising states Droid is for men, Pre is for women (video)

February 7, 2010

If you ask us, the Palm Pre Plus pretty much sells itself. So if we were working out a promo campaign for it, we’d just display the competitive pricing front and center and get the hell out of the product’s way. But that just wouldn’t do for Verizon. After all the machismo it attached to the Droid, the wireless provider is back with a set of ads for the Pre Plus targeted at the modern lady. We’re not told why two slabs of plastic and silicon with comparable sliding keyboards and similar internals must be compartmentalized by gender, but we don’t really care. The new ads are crazy enough in themselves, so just go see ‘em after the break.

Nokia C5 seemingly leaked, but don’t anticipate much

February 6, 2010

It’s been a little while since Nokia locked up the Cseries trademark, and it looks like they’re finally putting it to good use here following the Xseries launch a few months back — but don’t break out your party pants just yet, because it looks like this could be Nokia’s new catch-all bucket for the low-end Symbian gear. The so-called C5 that’s been leaked on Daily Mobile looks like a possible 6124 Classic successor thanks to a 3.2 megapixel cam, full HSPA, microSD expansion, AGPS, a 3.5mm headphone jack, S60 3.2, and… well, a rather classic candybar design. Given the overwhelming realness of the site’s shots, we’re going to go ahead and assume that it’s legit and planned for an MWC reveal later this month — and considering Nokia’s global low-cost domination strategy for Symbian, this might be priced very, very aggressively.

DARPA-based Siri virtual assistant hits the App Store, smartphone sentience can&

February 6, 2010

zDARPA-based Siri digital assistant hits the App Store, smartphone sentience can't be far behind (video)

It’s been well over six months since we first got wind of Siri, the DARPA-inspired smartphone app that pledged to take all the hassle out of… well… life. It’s a virtual assistant that can take care of menial tasks, things like finding restaurants, hearing reviews, and even booking tables — all with your voice. Siri asks simple questions and reacts to your answers, and while it sadly seems to have lost some of its military feel since its DARPA days (bummer), it’s a lovely companion to your happening lifestyle. Plus it’s free, and free is good! Check out a demonstration video after the break, and hit up the App Store to make with the download. Meanwhile, if you’re on some other smartphone platform you’ll have to wait. We fully expect Siri will break free of its current monotasking abode sometime in the future, but we don’t know when. We just don’t know when.
