Sprint debuts “Simply Everything” plan for $99 a month
February 29, 2008
We’re not sure what took them so long, but Sprint finally has joined its fellow major carriers in offering an unlimited plan for a flat rate — the now industry standard $99 — only this time it’s for all the marbles. Instead of just the unlimited voice offered by AT&T and Verizon, or the voice + SMS that T-Mobile has on offer, Sprint is undercutting the competition with a $99 plan that includes voice, data, text, Sprint TV, GPS and more. “Simply Everything” is available today to both CDMA and iDEN customers, and is open to existing and new subscribers. If you’ve got a family plan, it’s $5 less for every line you add ($99 + $94 + $89 and so on). While those with the gift of gab but no desire to surf the mobile webs might be disappointed that the rumored $60 unlimited voice plan didn’t materialize, this certainly undercuts the competition by healthy margin for the smartphone crowd, which is exactly what we were hoping for out of Sprint.

O2 threatened with hilarious penalty for poor 3G coverage
February 29, 2008
So the UK’s Ofcom (that’s Office of Communications, for those not in the know), in awarding its coveted 3G licenses, required that those five licensees all cover at least 80 percent of its population by December 31, 2007. Four of those five companies — Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange, and 3 — were able to meet that deadline; meanwhile, O2 has been holding down last place with a measly 75.69 percent blanketed with its high speed data, which leaves the Telefonica subsidiary about 2.5 million Britons short of its obligation. So when a government body is dealing with a large, multinational corporation that’s failing to hold up its end of the bargain, you’d think that there’d be some large fine levied, right? Not exactly. First of all, Ofcom’s extending O2’s deadline out to the end of June, and if they’re still not at 80 percent, the penalty will be to reduce the term of O2’s 3G license by a mere four months. Oh, and the license doesn’t even expire until 2021. Way to put your foot down, Ofcom.

KF750, KF240 to kick off new fashion lineup for LG?
February 29, 2008
Unwired View is reporting that LG is prepping to launch a new barrage of fashion handsets, kicking off the action properly with the KF750 slider at CeBIT next week. A prototype KF750 (pictured) appears to already be up at the auction block on a Romanian site, and we’re not sure “fashion” is the very first word that comes to mind — “hypnosis,” perhaps, on account of those crazy circular lights surrounding the d-pad. Features on this one should include a 5 megapixel cam (impressive if true, considering how trim this thing appears to be), 160MB of onboard storage, and microSD expansion. Meanwhile a lower-end KF240 is said to be hitting any day now — possibly before CeBIT, that is — setting its sights on Latin America and parts of Asia with a 2 megapixel cam.

Sprint stores shut this morning — but why?
February 29, 2008
It’s not as crisis-inducing as the Starbucks outage earlier this week may have been for some of us, but there’s another store closing happening this day that we need to be monitoring pretty closely: we’ve heard that Sprint will be closing every last one of its locations — even licensed dealers — from 9AM to 11AM PST for some sort of webcast. Rumor has it Sprint’s baristas will be given a refresher course on how to pull the perfect shot of espresso, but if it turns out to be something else, we’ll let you know.

iPhone launching in Ireland on March 14th?
February 29, 2008
Looks like the iPhone is launching in Ireland with O2 on March 14th, according to Pocket-lint. It’s supposed to go for the low, low price of €399 (including VAT) on the 8GB and €499 for the 16GB; we haven’t heard anything solid either way, but we’ll let you know if we do (and you do the same, would ya?).
