Samsung launches BizBee family of business-oriented smartphones

November 30, 2008

We’re not quite sure what Samsung’s trying to pull here, but it’s apparently using some BizBee moniker to revamp a few dusty smartphones with Windows Mobile 6.1. So far as we have the ability to tell, the BizBee family will house a “new range of designer business mobiles,” though Samsung’s starting off rather poorly by reintroducing the i780 with WinMo 6.1. Stated handset will be re-launched initially in the UK, Nordics, Spain and Netherlands this month, though we’re not sure if the marketing blitz will escape the clutches of Europe in order to serve as entertainment elsewhere. For Sammy’s sake, we hope not.

Cox to enter cellphone biz, link handsets to other cable-related services

November 27, 2008

We know, you’re just dying to state this is a complete shock, but we’re here to inform you that it’s not. If you’ll recall, Cox dug deep to snatch up a decent block of spectrum in this year’s 700MHz auction, and it even went so far as to promise a differentiated product that would eventually integrate with its other content and services. Sure enough, it’s keeping its word. After spending $500 million on wireless capacity in its markets, president Pat Esser states it’s time to turn things on. By relying on Cox’s own 3G network (along with Sprint’s, initially), the carrier will offer up an undisclosed amount of handsets that will “include a network address book that automatically synchronizes with home PCs” and grant remote programming of one’s DVR. Furthermore, users will be able to access e-mail and voicemail that they receive at home right on their mobile, and ideally, subscribers could watch Television shows right on their handsets. Get ready for an awkward new rival in the wireless space beginning, um, anytime now.

T-Mobile G1 coming to Walmart for $148.88

November 25, 2008

Well, now isn’t this something? Ideal Purchase has its fancy tiny iPhone 3G, but it’ll be Wally World offering up the G1 outside of official T-Mobile outlets. As we’d heard yesterday, 550 Walmart stores across the country will start selling the Android-powered handset beginning tomorrow, and folks who opt to pick one up here versus a traditional T-Mob store will save $31.11. Yep — according to company spokeswoman Melissa O’Brien, the new / upgrade-eligible customer price for a Walmart-sourced G1 will be just $148.88 with a 2-year agreement. Wait, what? You already purchased your G1 at the full price? They always said the early bird pays the premium… or something along those lines.

Palm axes an undisclosed amount of employees, sort of blames itself

November 24, 2008

My, my — how’s this for truth in advertising? Palm InfoCenter has confirmed with a Palm spokesperson that the flagging outfit will be laying off an undisclosed amount of employees as the economy worsens and the firm attempts to keep that final nail from being slammed down on its coffin. According to the spokesperson, the company will undergo a certain amount of restructuring (sound familiar?) that’ll “result in company reductions in the US and internationally.” Incredulously, the statement also included this gem: “The global economic downturn continues to dampen demand for consumer goods around the world, and the impact on the economic environment is worsened by our maturing Centro line and the length of time it is taking to ramp our new Windows Mobile products.” We won’t state for sure that it’s actually taking some of the blame here, but it sure sounds care about it. Now, if only it would take charge of its future…

Verizon halts Glyde sales, states it has “an issue” (update: maybe n

November 23, 2008

We’re not sure if these are like intimacy issues, magazine issues, or technical issues, but Verizon has put out a vaguely-worded all points bulletin to its employees saying that the Glyde’s somehow screwed up and should be pulled off shelves immediately. In fact, the situation’s so bad that Massive Red won’t even let you have a Glyde back if you send one in for service — they want to give you an enV2 in its place (though it states in the memo that customers throwing a hissyfit over the switcheroo can be provided with something else at the manager’s discretion). There’s no word beyond that on what the hell’s going on, but we’re told to expect more info shortly.

[Thanks, Carter]

Update: One important additional detail here — this information was received in a Verizon customer service call center. It’s not clear when (or if) corporate and third-party stores will receive the same story from the huge wigs.

Update 2: We’re still trying to get some official clarification from Verizon, but it seems that Glydes haven’t been pulled. We still believe the screen shots we were provided to be authentic, though — so it’s not clear if Verizon changed its mind, hasn’t yet pulled them, the stoppage was very brief, or this information only applies to certain departments or situations. We’ll continue to update as we get more.

WebKit-based Iris browser for Windows Mobile hits beta v2

November 19, 2008

Filed under:

We know how it goes — once you get your Windows Mobile setup situated how you enjoy it, making tweaks is a rare, rare occurrence. To that end, you probably passed on the highly hazardous first beta of the WebKit-based Iris browser. At long last, the entirely more stable beta v2 has emerged for those courageous enough to give it a go, and the designers are promising that the over 100 fixes and improvements make it “incredibly fast” and nearly life-altering. If you’re not keen on waiting for the next iteration of World wide web Explorer Mobile, and if you’re somehow not pleased with Opera Mini or Mobile Firefox, roll the dice with this one and see how things turn out.

AT&T starts to hawk Samsung Eternity on the internet

November 17, 2008

If there’s some pressing matter that’s preventing you from making it out to an AT&T store, there’s a plan B you might want to investigate now that the carrier’s website has started offering the Samsung Eternity for sale. It’ll run you the same $149.99 on contract after rebate that it’s going for in-store — or $379.99 commitment-free if your life is too awesome and chaotic to sign it away for two years. Any Vu owners planning on caving to temptation?

G1s said to be “pouring into China,” selling for large bucks

November 14, 2008

Google may still only be the number two search engine in China, but it looks like it’s starting to make some serious inroads into the sketchy cellphone market in the country, with the Android-based G1 reportedly now “pouring into China” though some dubious channels, and demanding some pretty hefty prices. According to China’s DoNews, the handsets are selling for upwards of 3,999 Chinese yuan (or just over $580), with shops charging an extra $70 or so to unlock it for you. That, some unnamed sellers say, is likely to keep the cost of the phone high in the short term, despite a reasonably high supply level.
