We won’t lie — Betty Boop is a curious choice to us, but we’ll admit that it’s entirely more very special than Hello Kitty. At any rate, fans of the lovably lady who just so happen to live in France can apparently pick one up from Bouygues T

iPhone 3G finally available contract-free
March 27, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, Apple, OS X
At long last folks with a contract phobia or just a general penchant for lawlessness can pay exorbitant amounts of money to get an iPhone 3G contract-free. As promised, 8GB models for $599 and 16GB ones for $699 are now available from AT&T and Apple stores, with AT&T requiring buyers to be existing AT&T customers, limited at one per, while Apple stores will sell the handsets to anyone wandering in off the street — rebellious demeanor preferred.

Verizon Alias2 leaks out, features dynamically changing button layout
March 27, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Verizon Wireless
Verizon’s original Alias U740 dual-hinge phone may not have rocked any worlds, but it was a clever attempt to provide the ideal of both a QWERTY keypad and a standard clamshell number pad in a single device — and it sounds like the Alias 2 we’re seeing leaked here improves on that concept by using dynamically-changing button labels to hammer home the mode switches. It’s not clear what tech is being used to switch layouts — there are some whispers that it’s an E-Ink display, since the labels apparently remain even without power — but given this phone’s expected price point, we’ll state we’re expecting more along the lines of one of those segmented LCDs found in cheap universal remotes. In other words, garbage. Hopefully we’ll be proven wrong at CTIA, we’ll let you know. Slightly larger photo after the break.

AT&T confirms contract-free $599 / $699 iPhone 3Gs for next week
March 21, 2009
Just in time to nab your soon-to-be-jailbroken copy of iPhone OS 3.0, AT&T has now confirmed that commitment-free iPhones are going to happen — soon, in fact. As of next Thursday, you’ll be able to waltz into the AT&T store of your choice and pick up an 8GB or 16GB unit for $599 and $699, respectively; that’s a tiny harder to swallow than the normal $199 / $299, granted, but in exchange, you’re free and clear without two years of your precious life sold off to a wireless carrier like it’s a cheap piece of meat. You’re worth more than that, you know?

AT&T, Communications Workers of America reach tentative agreement, strike (curre
March 9, 2009
It looks like that AT&T strike authorized by the Communications Workers of America back in early February won’t be coming to fruition. The two have reached a tentative agreement for the around 20,000 unionized workers that have been in contract negotations. For its part, AT&T’s expressed satisfaction with the agreement, but it still has to be submitted for approval by ratification vote from the CWA group members. Of course, should they vote nay, we’ll be back to square one. This isn’t over yet, so stay tuned.

Not digging the original red on Nokia’s XpressMusic 5310? What in tarnation is the matter with you? All kidding aside, those who just love to be the oddball can rejoice in the fact that T-Mobile USA has picked up two new hues for the aforesaid handset, and it’s not even charging any extra for ‘em. Available now for the low, low price of $0.00 after a two-year agreement, the 5310 can be selected in White Aqua and White Silver. As expected, all the internals have remained the same, so now it’s just up to your and that fellow on your shoulder to determine which variant is most suitable.

CE-Oh no he didn’t! Part LIX: Elevation’s McNamee predicts death to
March 6, 2009
Roger McNamee, founding partner of the Palm-rescuing investment firm Elevation Partners, has had some interesting things to state about what to anticipate from the Pre. Now, though, he’s really out done himself with what he has to state about the iPhone. In an interview with Bloomberg, McNamee (aka “Chubby Wombat Moonalice” when playing bass) predicted that the Pre will bring the downfall of Apple’s wunder-handset, saying:
June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. Consider it — if you bought the first iPhone, you purchased it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to purchase.
We don’t know the future, but we can sure tell you what we’re not buying right now. And besides, we don’t know too many early adopter types that could resist the siren call of 3G halfway through their existing iPhone contract, thereby re-upping their contract for another few millenia. That should be plenty enough time for Apple to whip up something new… or at least for Roger to get a haircut.
