iPhone 3G finally available contract-free

March 27, 2009

At long last folks with a contract phobia or just a general penchant for lawlessness can pay exorbitant amounts of money to get an iPhone 3G contract-free. As promised, 8GB models for $599 and 16GB ones for $699 are now available from AT&T and Apple stores, with AT&T requiring buyers to be existing AT&T customers, limited at one per, while Apple stores will sell the handsets to anyone wandering in off the street — rebellious demeanor preferred.

3DeeShell autostereoscopic iPhone skin now available to order

March 27, 2009

Intrigued by Wazabee’s promise of 3D images on an iPhone without the need for goofy 3D glasses? Then you’ll no doubt want to head on over to the company’s website post haste, as its 3DeeShell iPhone skin is now finally available to order for the not so low price of $49.99. In addition to adding an extra dimension to a currently limited number of apps (Wazabee provides three itself), the skin also serves a protective shell that you can leave on your iPhone at all times, with the autostereoscopic lens able to slide out to prevent unwanted headaches or hallucinations during non-3D use. Of course, the apps and lens will also work just fine on an iPod touch, just don’t expect a very snug fit from the case.

[Thanks, Cob]

Verizon Alias2 leaks out, features dynamically changing button layout

March 27, 2009

Verizon’s original Alias U740 dual-hinge phone may not have rocked any worlds, but it was a clever attempt to provide the ideal of both a QWERTY keypad and a standard clamshell number pad in a single device — and it sounds like the Alias 2 we’re seeing leaked here improves on that concept by using dynamically-changing button labels to hammer home the mode switches. It’s not clear what tech is being used to switch layouts — there are some whispers that it’s an E-Ink display, since the labels apparently remain even without power — but given this phone’s expected price point, we’ll state we’re expecting more along the lines of one of those segmented LCDs found in cheap universal remotes. In other words, garbage. Hopefully we’ll be proven wrong at CTIA, we’ll let you know. Slightly larger photo after the break.

AT&T confirms contract-free $599 / $699 iPhone 3Gs for next week

March 21, 2009

Just in time to nab your soon-to-be-jailbroken copy of iPhone OS 3.0, AT&T has now confirmed that commitment-free iPhones are going to happen — soon, in fact. As of next Thursday, you’ll be able to waltz into the AT&T store of your choice and pick up an 8GB or 16GB unit for $599 and $699, respectively; that’s a tiny harder to swallow than the normal $199 / $299, granted, but in exchange, you’re free and clear without two years of your precious life sold off to a wireless carrier like it’s a cheap piece of meat. You’re worth more than that, you know?

AT&T, Communications Workers of America reach tentative agreement, strike (curre

March 9, 2009

Filed under:

It looks like that AT&T strike authorized by the Communications Workers of America back in early February won’t be coming to fruition. The two have reached a tentative agreement for the around 20,000 unionized workers that have been in contract negotations. For its part, AT&T’s expressed satisfaction with the agreement, but it still has to be submitted for approval by ratification vote from the CWA group members. Of course, should they vote nay, we’ll be back to square one. This isn’t over yet, so stay tuned.

CE-Oh no he didn’t! Part LIX: Elevation’s McNamee predicts death to

CE-Oh no he didn't! Part LIX: Elevation's McNamee predicts death to iPhone on June 29Roger McNamee, founding partner of the Palm-rescuing investment firm Elevation Partners, has had some interesting things to state about what to anticipate from the Pre. Now, though, he’s really out done himself with what he has to state about the iPhone. In an interview with Bloomberg, McNamee (aka “Chubby Wombat Moonalice” when playing bass) predicted that the Pre will bring the downfall of Apple’s wunder-handset, saying:

June 29, 2009, is the two-year anniversary of the first shipment of the iPhone. Not one of those people will still be using an iPhone a month later. Consider it — if you bought the first iPhone, you purchased it because you wanted the coolest product on the market. Your two-year contract has just expired. Look around. Tell me what they’re going to purchase.

We don’t know the future, but we can sure tell you what we’re not buying right now. And besides, we don’t know too many early adopter types that could resist the siren call of 3G halfway through their existing iPhone contract, thereby re-upping their contract for another few millenia. That should be plenty enough time for Apple to whip up something new… or at least for Roger to get a haircut.
