Verizon asks for more time to spin off divested chunks of Alltel
April 30, 2009
In order to get the FCC to concur to Verizon’s huge acquisition of Alltel — the US’ 5th-largest carrier — it had to agree to some pretty serious concessions, including divestitures in a whole slew of markets to ensure that the competitive spirit remained intact. The “transaction” (as Verizon calls it) closed on January 9, and the resulting mega-carrier was given until May 9 — a week from Saturday — to finish spinning off the required markets. Well, as we all know, companies this big aren’t known for their agility, and sure enough, Verizon is asking for just a little more time to dot its i’s and cross its t’s. A “Request for Extension of Management Period” has been filed with the FCC on behalf of the companies asking for another 60 days, which means the divested markets would be up and running outside of Verizon’s control by July 8 of this year. Verizon blames “the sheer size and complexity of the divestitures coupled with the current economic conditions” for the request, but seriously, can’t they just throw this all up on eBay for, say, a 5- or 7-day auction and be done with it? No? [Warning: PDF link]

Verizon tidbits: Storm firmware saga continues, Niagara is the Tour, and more
April 29, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, LG, RIM, Verizon Wireless, EV-DO, CDMA, BlackBerry OS
We’re getting a few tasty tiny morsels seeping out of the Verizon camp this morning, and we just wanted to pass them along — nothing Earth-shattering here, but Niagara fans are definitely going to want to learn a new term:
- The BlackBerry 9630 Niagara will definitely be known as the Tour. (Boy Genius Report now has it pegged for July at $199, which certainly seems plausible.)
- The next BlackBerry Storm firmware will be released in Might (
we’re still anticipating this to be 113 until we hear otherwise). Update: 4.7.0.141 is circulating within the company now, so that might be our golden build! - The Voyager’s replacement — the VX11000 — will be known as the enV Touch.
- The carrier is “investigating” raising the 5GB cap on its data plan with the LTE rollout, since subscribers will presumably be consuming more.

MetroPCS nabs the Samsung Tint
April 29, 2009
If you’re looking for 3G, well, you can keep on looking, but the new Tint flip from Samsung has a few things going for it. MetroPCS’ latest AWS-enabled piece does GPS, support for the carrier’s ChatLINK “push-to-talk social networking tool,” voice recognition, and changeable faceplates — and what’s more, you’ve got both pink and grey included in the box. If neither of those colors suit your fancy, you’ve got more options available to you a la carte — and you can use the Tint’s Bluetooth support to make it happen, if you’re so inclined. We haven’t seen the Tint go live on MetroPCS’ site just yet, but it should be available now.

Motorola’s A4500 world phone caught in the FCC covered in Verizon tattoos
April 29, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, Windows Mobile, GSM, EV-DO, CDMA
We don’t have a formal unveiling for Motorola’s Verizon-bound A4500 world phone just yet, but an operation manual and some snapshots of its dress rehearsal from the FCC should suffice in the interim. From what we glean, it supports CDMA for VZW’s network and quad-band GSM for SIM-packing Vodafone customers and other overseas roaming needs. No points for design originality (Q9, anyone?), but it does boast a wealth of good features including two megapixel camera, EV-DO, stereo Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile (presumably 6.1), and a biometric fingerprint reader on the back of the phone. Not that we expected you to be eagerly expecting this one, but we’d venture to say a cameo in the FCC means it’s on track for release some time in the near future.

Skyhook CEO mentions Sony Ericsson X2 in passing
April 29, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, Sony Ericsson, Windows Mobile
In an interview with GigaOM, it seems that the founder and chief exec of Skyhook Wireless — the innovative geolocation clearinghouse whose database is used by the iPhone, among others — may have let the cat out of the bag on Sony Ericsson’s next WinMo set. Of course, it’s no huge secret that SE would be looking to follow on the XPERIA X1 at some point, but details have been virtually nonexistent; here, Skyhook’s Ted Morgan mentions that his company lost out on a contract to power the WinMo-based X2’s location-based platform to Google because… well, Google’s free. That’s as good of a confirmation as any that we’ve heard — now, we just need an official announcement and some pretty photos.

Broadcom and Qualcomm agree to cease suing one another, but not to halt hating
April 29, 2009
Truthfully, we’re having a hard time coming to grips with this. For as long as we wished that these two would stop bickering, it’s actually tough to swallow the fact that we’ll never again be able to write about “yet another lawsuit” between Qualcomm and Broadcom (in theory, anyway). After nearly three full years of fighting with pencils, papers and soulless words, the courtroom throwdowns are finally ceasing. In a shocking development, the two rivals have entered into a settlement and multi-year patent agreement that’ll “result in the dismissal with prejudice of all litigation between the companies, including all patent infringement claims in the International Trade Commission and US District Court in Santa Ana, as well as the withdrawal by Broadcom of its complaints to the European Commission and the Korea Fair Trade Commission.” The exact terms of the deal are posted after the break, though you should know that Qualcomm will have to shell out $891 million in cash (ouch!) over the next four years. The lawyers may be out of work, but you can rest assured that there’s no shortage of abhorrence between these frenemies.
