Verizon’s BlackBerry Tour coming July 12th, pre-order page now live
June 30, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, RIM, Verizon Wireless
Looks like Verizon’s got a winner here. That leaked promotional graphic was right on the money, as the carrier’s just replaced its BlackBerry Tour teaser with a pre-order page and, lo and behold, it’s indeed coming July 12th for a penny under $200. We’re still waiting to see if Sprint’s whispered July 20th date pans out, but regardless, if you want a Tour before anyone else, looks like VZW’s the way to go.
[Thanks, Jeff]
Update: She’s official. The press release says so.

SciPhone Dream G2 Android charger is best ever
June 30, 2009
One of our favorite intellectual property rips of current months is without a doubt the SciPhone Dream G2 from China. Having totally missed the point of Google’s open-source OS being, well, open-source and thus free for SciPhone’s use, the company instead chose to hack the G2’s “proprietory” OS to look like Android. The charger, however, built to look like the iconic Android mascot is pretty damn cute; enough so that the idea of paying $150 just to get our hands on the 100-240V USB charger has crossed our minds. See the Android’s naughty bits after the break.
[Thanks, Steven]

China Telecom mulling BlackBerry offering
June 30, 2009
We’ve got to assume that it’s a momentous occasion for a manufacturer any time they’ve an opportunity to break into the world’s single largest phone market, so if they’re prepping the bubbly out in Waterloo, we can’t say we’d blame them. China Telecom — one of China’s three nationals — reported this week that it has engaged RIM about the possibility of bringing BlackBerrys to its lineup No deal has been made just yet, but taking into account that China Unicom doesn’t offer any of the devices and China Mobile’s been soft on marketing it, Telecom could have an ace up its sleeve if it brings hot models to retail and pushes ‘em hard. RIM’s not talking so far, so there’s no telling where the speaks are — or when the deal might be finalized.

Samsung announces four phones spanning the low to midrange
June 30, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
We’ve already seen a couple of these semi-officially, but it seems that Samsung has now fully, honestly announced these four fresh models for all of the world to ogle. There’s actually not a lot to see here — they’re so well-buried in Samsung’s literature that we were only able to find the S6700 ourselves — but they present interesting options for anyone looking to get in on mobile music at a ridiculously low price point. Starting at the bottom, the M2310 and M2510 together formulate a powerful one-two flip / slider punch (okay, that’s saying a bit much) with dedicated music controls and support for up to 8GB of microSD storage; the M2310 has a VGA cam while the M2510 steps it up to 1.3 megapixels. Moving upwards, the C5510 adds in a dual-band 3G radio, 16GB expandability, and a 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera, while the S6700 slider (pictured) tops out the range with HSDPA, a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual-LED flash, GPS, and 120MB of storage on board. Still no word on when or where these are launching, but it seems like the S6700 might be available in some regions if you look hard enough.

Windows Marketplace launching with 600 apps, or one bazillion times what the App
June 30, 2009
So Microsoft France’s product manager for Windows Mobile, Audrey Zolghadr, is saying that the company’s upcoming Windows Marketplace launch will be accompanied by around 600 apps certified and available on day one. Depending on your perspective, that’s either ridiculously anemic — the iPhone’s App Store has a couple orders of magnitude more currently available, for example — or a veritable cornucopia. Though the Ovi Store has no shortage of “items” to buy, an overwhelming majority of those are currently wallpapers, ringtones, and the like, and Palm’s App Catalog launched with so few apps that many folks (we’re not naming names) literally had every app installed within a few minutes of buying the phone. At the end of the day, it’s all about signal-to-noise ratio; if Microsoft can deliver 600 apps and half of those are terrific, they’re on the right track — though at this point, we’re thinking the next battle in Smartphone Platform Wars doesn’t really kick off until WinMo 7 swings by anyway.

Android lovingly, painstakingly ported to Samsung’s Omnia
June 29, 2009
Filed under: Handsets, Software, Samsung, Android
This project’s a few days old, but it’s so cool that we wanted to bring it to your attention anyway: “andromnia.” From the name, you might be able to gather that this is all about porting Android to the Samsung Omnia, which represents the marriage of one awesome piece of hardware with one very awesome platform, as far as we’re concerned. Of course, a project of this magnitude requires hackery of the highest order, and the going’s not simple — things like “calling” don’t readily work at the moment — but it appears to be actively developing, so if you’ve got an Omnia handy and WinMo isn’t really your bag, we’d suggest keeping an eye on this.

HTC’s Sense UI not coming to any “Google” branded phones
June 28, 2009
We’ve got some good and bad news… mostly bad, though. First, the good news: HTC is looking into finding a way to bring its new Sense UI — the one featured prominently in the new Hero — to its non-Google branded Android devices, such as Canadian carrier Roger Wireless’ Magic. Unfortunately, and this is the bad news, even that’s not a sure thing, and as you can probably guess from the wording, any phone that’s got the “with Google” branding, like T-Mobile USA’s G1 and myTouch 3G, won’t be getting a chance at all due to the same licensing terms that prevented Microsoft Exchange clients on those same phones. Them’s the breaks, folks, but we’re sure some hacker with enough know-how will bypass the silly restrictions and do it anyway.
