Sprint follows T-Mobile’s lead, wants $350 for HTC Touch Pro2

August 31, 2009

We figured the suits over at T-Mobile USA were on some of that good stuff when they slapped an almost comical $350 (on contract) price tag on HTC’s Touch Pro2, but evidently said “stuff” has made its way into the halls of Overland Park as well. After months of watching evidence mount, Sprint has finally come clean and admitted that HTC’s EV-DO Rev. A-equipped superphone is coming to its network, and with it will come access to Sprint Television as well as NFL Mobile Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup Mobile apps. The smartphone will go on sale September 8th, though you’ll have to pony up $349.99 (after a $100 mail-in rebate) in order to secure one on a two-year contract. We’re all about that 3.6-inch WVGA tilting screen, but with Palm’s Pre selling on this very network for a full $150 less, we’re thinking this one won’t appeal to many outside of the WinMo faithful.

Motorola takes environmentally-conscious MOTOCUBO A45 to Brazil

August 31, 2009

To call the industrial design of Motorola’s new MOTOCUBO A45 “polarizing” might be an understatement, but at least we have the ability to all concur that slicing back on a phone’s environmental impact is a good thing, right? The A45 — which we’d previously spied as the Murano — is a pretty run-of-the-mill messaging phone with a 2 megapixel cam, EDGE data, 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio, a “fresh and modern” (their words, not ours) design and color scheme, and built-in access to Orkut, Facebook, and MySpace, but the massive news here has to be the eco angle. Like the Renew before it, the MOTOCUBO is made in part from recycled plastic bottles and is 70 percent recyclable when you’ve moved on to larger, better, stronger phones down the road — but for now, plan on spending R$549 (about $292) unlocked when it hits Brazil next month.

China Telecom talking to Palm for the Pre?

August 31, 2009

Nabbing a contract with a carrier pushing into nine-figure subscriber count territory would go a long way toward helping any manufacturer’s woes, so it’s reasonable to believe that Palm would be shopping its latest wares around the streets of Hong Kong and Beijng where China’s big three carriers are headquartered. Intriguingly, the Financial Times has just casually mentioned in a somewhat-unrelated piece that “China Telecom is planning to offer the Palm to its subscribers,” a perfect fit taking into account that rival Unicom is poised to launch the iPhone and Telecom runs CDMA with nascent EV-DO coverage in the works. The Pre already knows a thing or two about CDMA networks from its Sprint and Bell launches, of course, so they’ve already got that base covered — beyond that brief FT mention, though, we’ve got nothing, so it’s hard to say when this might be hitting retail.

Video: Palm Pre jumps the border, now shipping on Bell

August 31, 2009

Right on schedule, the Palm Pre has started shipping to Bell Mobility customers. The Bell exclusive marks the first international launch of Palm’s tiny savior and to celebrate, we’ve got commercials — a pair of knee-slappers featuring real live Canadians. And you thought that the mirror on the back of the Pre was only for the ladies.

Nokia Money wants some of what PayPal’s having

August 30, 2009

Filed under:

A healthy percentage of Nokia’s revenue comes from emerging markets, and the company goes to great lengths to fill out the very bottom rungs of its lineup with devices to satisfy seemingly every need of each demographic — built-in flashlights, segmented contact lists for phones shared among family members, the list goes on — and now the company’s tackling another need by offering rudimentary banking and money transfer services by way of the handset. Noting that of the four billion cellphones in the world there are only 1.6 billion bank accounts, Nokia’s so-called Nokia Money service will bring electronic money management to some areas of the world for the first time — a customer need only know the phone number of the intended recipient to send a payment. Powered by mobile money transfer specialist Obopay, Nokia Money’s going to be shown at Nokia World next week on its way to a rollout in choose markets early next year.

Possible Palm Pre, Eos, Storm 2, and more revealed in Verizon database

August 30, 2009

Well would you look at those. Six snaps from Verizon’s internal inventory database showing the BlackBerry Storm 2, Touch Pro 2, Omnia II, the Samsung Convoy and a pair of previously unseen Palm devices tagged with “P101″ and “P121″ monikers. It’s just a guess, but we, like PhoneArena, think there’s a very good chance that these are the Pre (already shipping on Sprint as model P100 according to the FCC) and its little Eos cousin, respectively. Now, anyone still doubting a Q1 2010 release on Big Red?

If you love TUAW, iPhones, and apps (and let’s be honest… you do), then today should be filled with wonderment and excitement. Why you ask? If you know what’s good for you, you’ll get to downloading it right now. It’s what Steve Jobs would want you to do.

Cricket, MetroPCS launch Samsung Messager II

August 29, 2009

Seemingly unconvinced that enough people had stated “hey, you spelled ‘messenger’ wrong” after the first model, archrival regionals Cricket and MetroPCS have both launched Samsung’s Messager II with a 2 megapixel camera, EV-DO, and a pair of keypads: one slide-out QWERTY, one numeric permanently affixed up front. Admittedly, the name is no stranger than the “Vice” brand adopted by the phone’s twin sister up in Canada, but isn’t it kind of ironic that a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard be given a name that nearly everyone thinks is a typo? Find this sucker now on MetroPCS for $149 and Cricket for a hair under $200.

iPhone coming to China Unicom in Q4 — it’s official (updated)

August 29, 2009

And now it’s official: China Unicom has struck a 3-year exclusive deal to finally bring the iPhone to China’s big subscriber-base potential. The carrier will offer two different “3G iPhones” to its 141 million subscribers and it will purchase the phones wholesale from Apple — no revenue sharing deal here children. Neither Apple nor China Unicom will reveal specs on the phones (WiFi?) or pricing. So that’s it, short and sweet after what feels like years of rumors. But really, unless you live in China and subscribe to China Unicom what else is there to know?

Update: There was apparently an error in the WSJ piece — the deal is not exclusive to China Unicom.

Nokia 3710a, some Motorola (Morrison, perhaps?) get FCC approval for T-Mobile

August 29, 2009

For T-Mobile USA customers, the FCC slid a couple particularly interesting batches of docs into its vast library in the past week: the Nokia 3710a and a mysterious Motorola. First, the 3710a (pictured) is simply an Americanized version of the 3710 flip introduced a couple months back, offering a 3.2 megapixel cam, Series 40, and a concealed external display in addition to that all-important dose of 3G on T-Mobile’s AWS band. The more interesting item, though, might be this Motorola — as usual Moto has done a terrific job of concealing virtually all useful bits of information about this phone, but we have reason to believe that it could be the Android-powered Morrison since it’s got WiFi on board in addition to 3G, Bluetooth, and the usual RF suspects. With Moto’s massive announcement just around the corner, we wouldn’t be surprised.
