Philips rolls into China with WinMo 6.5 via D908 slate
December 31, 2009
Philips has imbued its power-sipping Xenium line with some reasonably attractive industrial design in the past, so we’re not too sure what they’re thinking with this latest D908 here; granted, it’s apparently got WinMo 6.5 on board, but that’s no excuse — goodness knows there are plenty of beautiful devices on the market these days with Microsoft guts. The upshot, though, is that this has EV-DO with an eye on a Chinese launch, a surefire sign that it’ll be coming to China Telecom. Other features include a WVGA display, 5 megapixel cam, 2GB of onboard storage with microSD expansion up to 32GB, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, and an integrated FM radio. Just figure out how to slip this into a case 3 or 4mm thinner than the D908’s beefy 14.5mm, Philips, and you’ve got a winner on your hands.

Palm smartphone pops up in WiFi certification database: is this Verizon’s
December 31, 2009
Look, let’s not beat around the bushes — Verizon Wireless will one day stock Palm’s Pre. It’s a rather well documented fact, and at this point the only real question is “when?” Judging by a mysterious Wi-Fi Certificate that just popped up, we’re beginning to think that the waiting period is almost up, and with CES 2010 happening in a week, there’s hardly a better time for us to really begin believing. If you’ll recall, Sprint’s Pre snagged a Wi-Fi Certificate number of P100EWW, and just this summer we spotted a few leaked Palm devices within VZW documents with “P101″ and “P121″ monikers; lo and behold, the certificate for this elusive dual-mode (WiFi and cellular) smartphone boasts a P101EWW label. We aren’t trying to read too deeply between the lines or anything, but if this isn’t a Pre destined for Massive Red, we’re eager to know what kind of new mobile Palm has lined up for its presser at CES.
[Thanks, Rehman]

GSM call encryption code cracked, published for the whole world to see
December 31, 2009
Did you know that the vast majority of calls carried out on the 3.5 billion GSM connections in the world this day are protected by a 21-year old 64-bit encryption algorithm? You should now, given that the A5/1 privacy algorithm, devised in 1988, has been deciphered by German computer engineer Karsten Nohl and published as a torrent for fellow code cracking enthusiasts and less benevolent forces to exploit. Worryingly, Karsten and his crew of merry men obtained the binary codes by simple brute force — they fed enough random strings of numbers in to effectively guess the password. The GSM Association — which has had a 128-bit A5/3 key available since 2007, but found little takeup from operators — has responded by having a whinge about Mr. Nohl’s intentions and stating that operators could just modify the existing code to re-secure their networks. Right, only a modified 64-bit code is just as vulnerable to cracking as the one that just got cracked. It’s important to note that simply having the code is not in itself enough to eavesdrop on a call, as the cracker would be faced with just a vast stream of digital communications — but Karsten comes back to reassure us that intercepting software is already available in customizable open source varieties. So don’t be like Tiger, keep your truly private conversations off the airwaves, at least for a while.

December 31, 2009
We’d heard webOS 1.3.5 would be coming to the Pre on Sprint today, and here we go — it’s being pushed to devices right now. The official changelog is quite long, but the big-ticket tweaks include the removal of the app storage limit, superior performance, and improved battery life. We’ll let you know how our update goes — you let us know the same now, kaykay? Kay.

Nexus One trounces 3D benchmark, gets caught in high-res photoshoot
December 31, 2009

Just when you thought you’d seen it all with Nexus One, along comes an old friend with some higher resolution shots of the handset (hooray!) and a pretty impressive 3D benchmark test using Qualcomm’s Neocore. Video’s after the break –that Snapdragon chip outputs a mean framerate, no?
Update: Also on hand after the break is a high-quality video of the UI — ten minutes of it, to be exact. Just a warning, there’s a brief NSFW clip from Californication at around the two minute mark. With that stated, grab some popcorn and enjoy!
Update 2: The original YouTube video was pulled. We’ve uploaded a new copy and embedded below.

Nokia brings Apple patent fight to the ITC, states most Apple products infringe
December 30, 2009
Looks like Nokia’s pulling all the stops in its patent fight with Apple: in addition to the already-filed lawsuit, the Finnish company has now filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission, alleging that “virtually all” of Apple’s products infringe one of seven patents covering user interfaces, cameras, antennas, and power management. Ouch. Of course, this is a pretty standard tactic as far as major patent disputes go — this is just a second front of the same war, and we’d expect Apple to lodge an ITC complaint of its own in due time. What could make this interesting is the ITC’s power to ban imports of infringing products in relatively short order, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.

Verizon loading up on 600,000 Pixis soon?
December 29, 2009
Verizon’s intro of webOS equipment is probably going to come out as one of Huge Red’s most ballyhooed moves of early 2010 — but to support a launch of that magnitude, you need phones ready and waiting to go. To that end, Palm had been rumored to have 800,000 Pixis (or Pixi Pluses, depending on how these things are going to be marketed) on order from ODM Compal for delivery this quarter, but that number has apparently been revised down to 600,000 for delivery in the first quarter of next year on news that the units had failed some of Verizon’s tests. Considering the carrier’s famously brutal equipment certification process, we wouldn’t doubt it — let’s just hope this doesn’t delay the launch by much.

On the internet iPhone sales back on in New York City
December 29, 2009
We might never know exactly why AT&T suspended on the web sales of the iPhone to residents of New York last night, but it doesn’t matter anymore — the site’s been updated and on the web sales are back… on the internet. In other news, previously spiking sales of pants in the New York area have suddenly flatlined.

Sony Ericsson U5i passes FCC muster, but what’s it?
December 29, 2009
There’s a new Sony Ericsson in town, and it’s not the X10 for a change of pace — this time, it’s a mysterious device known simply as the “U5i.” That certainly follows SE’s classic naming convention, but what might give us the best clue is that the Satio is known as the U1 and the Aino as the U10 — in other words, we’re probably looking at a full-touch handset of some sort. Coincidentally, Cellpassion had previously dug up a user agent profile for a U5i, calling out a 640 x 360 display, 2 megapixel cam (what?), and Symbian — so if those numbers pan out, we might not be looking at a “Satio killer,” so to talk. Then again, we’ve also seen the U5 model number associated with that 8.1 megapixel Kurara, so it’s anyone’s guess what’s really going on here until we see something official. At any rate, it’s interesting to be distracted momentarily from the company’s Android efforts; Symbian might have some life left in it after all, yeah?
