T-Mobile myTouch 3G granted ultra-minor firmware update, too
January 31, 2010
The CLIQ isn’t having all the Android over-the-air update fun this day — and unlike Motorola’s little debacle, this upgrade looks like it’s here to stay. The myTouch 3G has started receiving what appears to be the tiniest of cute little updates — so little, in fact, that it repairs just one bug: a dodgy missed call indicator that wasn’t showing up consistently. The bottom line is that you can’t anticipate Android 2.0 or 2.1 here — you’ll still be at 1.6, and if you’re intentionally not answering your phone, you may have actually preferred the bug anyhow. Let us know how your updates go, folks.

Vodafone facing more pressure to shed Verizon, other key assets
January 30, 2010
Among European wireless conglomerates, it’s not just Deutsche Telekom that’s under the gun to make magic happen for investors these days. Shareholders of the UK’s Vodafone are banging on the doors, too, asking why the company’s stock is trading an estimated 30 percent lower than the sum of its parts — and they want something done about it. Part of the problem appears to be the fact that Voda hasn’t seen a dime from its 45 percent ownership of Verizon Wireless since 2005 (the joint venture simply hasn’t paid any dividends) and it doesn’t anticipate to for at least another couple years — but there are apparently a variety of assets in its portfoilo around the world that have investors worked up, including its part ownership of France’s SFR. CEO Vittorio Colao (pictured) has made no secret of the fact that all options are on the table and Verizon Communications would likely be more than happy to snap up Vodafone’s 45 percent stake; with the guys with all the money starting to get worked up, we might see some blockbuster deals happen in 2010.

SlingPlayer Mobile 2.0 for WinMo gets finger-friendly
January 29, 2010
Sling has given the Windows Mobile community a little love this week with the release of SlingPlayer Mobile 2.0, blessing it with a completely redesigned “sleek and intuitive” interface and a handful of new features that bring it to parity with its counterparts on other platforms. First off, the UI’s been reworked to make styli a thing of the past — everything should now be usable with a finger — and they’ve added multiple viewing modes for widescreen and zoomed content. You’ve also got support for Sling Accounts, an improved guide and DVR control, and fully-blessed streaming over both 3G and WiFi on any network. Anything running WinMo 6 or up with a touchscreen should theoretically work and it’s a free upgrade from 1.6 — only catch is that you need a Slingbox Solo, Pro, or Pro HD to use it (older models are being blocked, an annoying habit that we’ve seen with other current SlingPlayer releases). It’s available for download now.

Toshiba TG02 lives, drops by the FCC
January 29, 2010
Before the Nexus One and the HD2, there was the Toshiba TG01, sprinting along with a 1GHz Snapdragon in its belly and a 4.1-inch front end. Alas, that phone was hamstrung by a resistive touchscreen and a poorly thought-out skin atop an even worse OS (WinMo 6.1), but even by today’s standards its hardware spec is top notch. Color us intrigued, then, to find its successor finally making its FCC debut — with Bluetooth, GPS and WiFi (802.11b/g) connectivity in tow and a case outline suggesting some earlier leaked shots might still be accurate. It’s a quad-band GSM handset, though from the tests we’ve seen it appears to sadly lack 3G frequencies for the US. The marketing name has also been confirmed as the TG02 and with MWC 2010 fast approaching, who’s to say we’re not going to have a brand new Toshiba handset to fawn over? Go past the break for more.

HTC’s HD2 carrying a secret stash of hidden RAM
January 29, 2010
Will this phone ever stop surprising us? Rumblings that all HD2 devices have 576MB of RAM inside them started developing in China a tiny while before T-Mobile unveiled its upgraded US-bound handset with, funnily enough, the same amount of memory. Now, those trusty souls over at XDA-developers have concocted custom ROMs for everyone else to free up the extra 128MB of operational headroom, and user feedback appears to corroborate the theory. We can hardly start to fathom the reasons for HTC disabling part of its available hardware, other than to guess that a WinMo 7 upgrade was in the company’s plans for this phone all along and it just wanted to keep its ability to handle the new OS under wraps. Video and pictorial evidence of cracking past the 448MB barrier after the break.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Is this the Samsung Galaxy 2?
January 29, 2010
You could accuse Samsung’s first production Android device, the Galaxy, of many things — but you couldn’t really accuse it of being pretty. Maybe that’s about to change with the phone’s replacement, though, now that Androphones has scored a render of a device that appears to be an Android-powered Sammy that’s looking a lot more put-together than anything they’ve released so far. Even superior, it apparently has the chops to live up to its pretty face with a 1GHz Snapdragon, 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 5 megapixel cam, Android 2.1, and a whopping 32GB of internal storage on its way to an alleged MWC unveil, but we see one problem here: Samsung makes its own systems-on-chip, so we don’t see why they’d be sourcing a Snapdragon here. That said, the picture looks real enough — and you don’t see rabid Samsung fans make convincing fake renders too often — so we’ll hold out hope this gets announced one way or another.

50 Android games demonstrated in one video — who states Android can’
January 29, 2010
50 seems to be a pretty trendy number right now, what with Palm’s Pre Plus and Samsung’s i8910 HD both showing off the capability to run more than 49 concurrent processes. Joining that number party, albeit in a different fashion, is this video demonstrating 50 games running smooth as butter on a Motorola Droid handset. If you thought you had to have a Zune HD, iPod touch or one of them webOS thingies to get your mobile gaming on, maybe this will serve as a competent dissuader. See it after the break.
