WebKit-based Iris browser for Windows Mobile hits beta v2

November 19, 2008

Filed under:

We know how it goes — once you get your Windows Mobile setup situated how you enjoy it, making tweaks is a rare, rare occurrence. To that end, you probably passed on the highly hazardous first beta of the WebKit-based Iris browser. At long last, the entirely more stable beta v2 has emerged for those courageous enough to give it a go, and the designers are promising that the over 100 fixes and improvements make it “incredibly fast” and nearly life-altering. If you’re not keen on waiting for the next iteration of World wide web Explorer Mobile, and if you’re somehow not pleased with Opera Mini or Mobile Firefox, roll the dice with this one and see how things turn out.

AT&T starts to hawk Samsung Eternity on the internet

November 17, 2008

If there’s some pressing matter that’s preventing you from making it out to an AT&T store, there’s a plan B you might want to investigate now that the carrier’s website has started offering the Samsung Eternity for sale. It’ll run you the same $149.99 on contract after rebate that it’s going for in-store — or $379.99 commitment-free if your life is too awesome and chaotic to sign it away for two years. Any Vu owners planning on caving to temptation?

G1s said to be “pouring into China,” selling for large bucks

November 14, 2008

Google may still only be the number two search engine in China, but it looks like it’s starting to make some serious inroads into the sketchy cellphone market in the country, with the Android-based G1 reportedly now “pouring into China” though some dubious channels, and demanding some pretty hefty prices. According to China’s DoNews, the handsets are selling for upwards of 3,999 Chinese yuan (or just over $580), with shops charging an extra $70 or so to unlock it for you. That, some unnamed sellers say, is likely to keep the cost of the phone high in the short term, despite a reasonably high supply level.

Sprint posts Q3 net loss of $326 million, sees 1.3 million subs leave

November 11, 2008

Sprint’s year just keeps getting worse. After losing over 900,000 customers last quarter while posting a $344 million loss, the company insistent on advertising with faux soap operas and in black and white (and yellow) is hanging its head once more. During Q3, the carrier saw 1.3 million net subscribers head for the exits, and it also reported a loss of $326 million. According to CEO Dan Hesse, Sprint “has yet to turn the corner,” warning that the process of turning things around would be gradual. Moving forward, the company expects gross additions to “stabilize,” while the turnover rate is apt to remain at around 2.15%. In related news, the provider’s stock price has sunk around 60% in the past six months, and while that’s surely bad news to shareholders, not many other mega-corps out there are doing tremendously better.

November 10, 2008

Not that you don’t already have an awesome idea of what HTC’s luscious Touch HD looks like from all the hands-on love it’s been receiving overseas, but how’s about an official unboxing in Italy to really put the cherry on top? Go on, Europeans — enjoy your Touch HD. It’s not like we want one in our part of the world anyway. In fact, don’t even bother checking out the read link, there’s nothing worth being totally envious of in there, anyway.

Debian gets ported to the G1, makes nice with Android

November 10, 2008

Current firmware updates may have aimed to close down such shenanigans, but it looks they were a little too slow to stop Jay Freeman (a.k.a. Saurik) from going to town with his newly jailbroken G1 and installing Debian on the handset. What’s more, he apparently even managed to get Debian and Android to play nice with each other, letting you have a absolutely normal and unassuming phone by day and a nerd machine by night. As you might anticipate, however, it’s not exactly as easy as installing an app from the Android Market, but anyone with a tiny experience in installing Linux distributions on unconventional devices should be able to follow the instructions fairly easily, although actually turning it into something useful is another matter. Hit up the read link below to get started.

Kodak signs into patent cross-license agreement with Nokia

November 10, 2008

Details are pretty scant at the moment, but Eastman Kodak Company has entered into a mysterious patent license agreement with Nokia. All we’re told is that the deal will enable each outfit “access to the other’s intellectual property portfolio,” and it’ll also provide “significant benefits to both companies, [while being] royalty bearing to Kodak.” Outside of that, we’re left to wonder what’s in store here, so what they hey — we’ll take a stab: a Kodak sensor within the not-yet-conceived N97? Or maybe a Kodak-branded printer-scanner-fax machine in the Tube 2? The intrigue is killing us.

Greatest projector / iPhone clone combo handset in the world now up for sale

November 6, 2008

Filed under:

Look, here’s what you need to do: reach into the appropriate pocket on your personage, take out your phone, and throw it into the nearest wall. It sucks. The N70 from Lanye (or ChinaKing, or… somebody from China), which we’ve drooled over previously, is a candybar phone with a 2.4-inch screen, Bluetooth 2.0, and a tiny bit of dual-band GSM. Oh, and a built-in projector. And an interface that nearly perfectly mirrors that of the iPhone with the addition of voice recording and MMS. It’s awesome, and it’s now available for import for a mere $345. A bargain at any price.

[Thanks, Andrew]
